Winter can be tough on the skin, so adjusting make-up products to be more protective helps to keep anyone glowing throughout the cold weather.

Cold weather, rain, wind and central heating all cause changes in the skin and this always affects how make-up looks. Knowing which products work in the cold weather can help to protect skin as well as look better.

  1. Creamy Foundation: This may or may not be a moisturizing formula depending on skin type but a thicker foundation will protect skin from the elements. In severely cold climates take care to avoid water or gel-based formulas as these can literally freeze on the skin. Cream compacts are excellent for adding a physical protective barrier and today's formulas do not have to look thick and caked if applied properly. Better still, the extra coverage that these give is perfect for re-touching red areas around the nose and cheeks. The polished look is also ideal for a more formal party season.
  2. Creamy Lipstick: Bright colored matte or satin lipsticks give a sophisticated party look but the additional benefit or a proper lipstick is that it sits on the lips and helps to protect them. Use a good lip balm overnight or underneath lipstick to nourish and let the lip color do a skincare job whilst also brightening up a dull winter complexion.
  3. Tinted Lip Balm: For those uncomfortable with a full lip color or for natural days, tinted lip balm adds color whilst nourishing dry, winter lips. Look for fresh, bright translucent colors such as red, cerise, tangerine or coral as these can brighten up the face without looking too made-up.
  4. Lash Building Mascara: By the time the cold season with short days and rain clouds is underway, it is easy to feel pale and washed out looking. Choosing a long lasting, lash building mascara will help to open eyes and define features. This gives a bright, awake look and using a clean black also helps to minimize tired looking eyes or a sallow complexion. A waterproof formula will be comfortable for anyone who rubs their eyes by evening, or who has a cold.
  5. False Lashes: Beautiful lashes have been a party staple for several seasons and are gaining in popularity. They are the perfect fix for a quick party look; especially good for anyone who finds it hard to be bothered in the winter. Quick to put on, the really dramatic ones are perfect teamed with just a little liner and mascara. Keeping these at home means never being stuck for special occasion and also having to worry less about party outfits. Best of all they detract from cold sores, red patches, wind burnt skin and winter dark circles as well as looking great in photographs.
  6. Liquid Liner: Like false lashes, liquid liner is a quick fix for make-up. Better still it is less likely to pull the skin than a kohl pencil so works better for tired eyes. Get a long lasting formula and it will not smudge if the wind makes eyes teary or if you have recently had a cold.
  7. Bright Blusher: A bright colored blusher is the best way to freshen up a dull day. Cream blushers are also great in the winter as long as skin is not too dry. Smooth these on with fingertips for a slightly dewy look. However, beware of using cream on patchy, scaly dehydrated skin as it will apply unevenly.
  8. Concealer: For anyone without a creamy foundation, concealer offers a quick cover up for red noses, winter blotches or dark circles. It is also great to use over foundation for extra cover. Choose a long-lasting, dry formula in the exact right color which means it can be used to cover anything. Make sure to re-match concealers that have been used on skin in the summer in case they are too dark in winter. This is the case even for people who do not tan much as an orange blotch on the skin only highlights rather than conceals.
  9. Smoky Eye Palette: This can be just a simple eye duo with a mid-toned and a dark shadow. Nars are fantastic for these as they stock a wide range of wearable colors. Winter is a great time for smoky eyes as they stay put much better than in the summer. In cold weather they look polished and dramatic. For a winter feel look at plums, grays and glitter eye shadow.
  10. Highlighter: An illuminating product can help to give skin a glow in the cold weather. Dotted over blusher or used to highlight cheek bones this can give a fresh look back to tired skin. Subtle illuminating products can be used all over for a glow and look great on shoulders and arms for parties. Some of the newest products also contain hydrating ingredients which will help replenish the skin and make it softer and smoother.
